Works by Ten Photographers Offer Rare Glimpse into Rural and Urban Life in China

(ST. LOUIS): The Missouri Botanical Garden is pleased to welcome the International Photography Collaborative to Monsanto Hall located in the Ridgway Building at the Missouri Botanical Garden from March 13 through May 10.
         
International Photography Collaborative: China at the Missouri Botanical Garden is an example of the broad collaborations and cultural initiatives that are the focus of the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum. Organized by IPHF, ten photographers representing St. Louis were invited to Nanjing, China to participate in the 2014 Nanjing Federation of the Arts Festival. This was the first time that photography was allowed into the esteemed annual exhibition.
         
During their visit to China, the photographers documented both rural and urban life in China producing a poignant glimpse into this global powerhouse of business and art.
         
The International Photography Collaborative sponsors cultural exchange between the United States and other countries and will continue in 2015 when ten photographers from Nanjing travel to St. Louis.

The exhibit is sponsored in part by Emerson, PNC ArtsAlive, Webster University and the Confucius Institute.

Installation viewings are included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $8 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on most Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Children ages 12 and under and Garden members are free.

ST. LOUIS, MO . . . New Line Theatre, “the bad boy of musical theatre,” continues its 24th season of adult, alternative musical theatre, with the St. Louis premiere of the outrageous JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA, running March 5-28, 2015, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road. This show contains very adult content and language.

The New Line season continues with one of New Line’s wildest and most ambitious projects, JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA, the smash-hit, multi-award winning musical that ran to unprecedented rave reviews and standing ovations at the National Theatre in London, after a sold-out run in London’s West End. The Sunday Times called it “a shocking, irresistibly funny masterpiece.” With music by Richard Thomas, and book and lyrics by Thomas and Stewart Lee, this is an audacious, fearless piece of theatre that brilliantly and hilariously dissects the cultural forces that have kept Jerry Springer on the air all these years, the lives of quiet desperation that explode into public view in Springer’s weirdly nonjudgmental, national confessional.

The New Line cast includes Keith Thompson  (Jerry Springer), Matt Pentecost (Jonathan Wierus), Matt Hill (Steve Wilkos); and as Jerry’s guests, Zachary Allen Farmer, Ryan Foizey, Marshall Jennings, Lindsey Jones, Taylor Pietz, Christina Rios, Anna Skidis, and Luke Steingruby; and as Jerry’s studio audience (among other things), Reynaldo Arceno, Tyler Cheatem, Joel Hackbarth, Ann Hier, Sarah Porter, Michelle Sauer, Kimi Short, and Christopher Strawhun. Originally opening in 2003, Jerry Springer the Opera ran over 600 performances in London, before touring the UK. The production won four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, and it was the first show ever to win all four Best Musical awards in the UK (Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and What’s On Stage). The first North American performance was at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and it was performed by a number of American regional theatre companies, before making its New York debut in 2008 at Carnegie Hall.

The New York Times wrote, “Will it turn out that the great American musical of the early 21st century is an opera born in Britain? A convincing case for the rights to that title was made by the celestial Jerry Springer The Opera, the notorious show from London about the transcendent within tabloid television. . . Now ‘celestial’ might seem an ill-chosen adjective for a work devoted to the raw and nasty public doings of a throng of aspiring celebrities with dirty little secrets expressed in dirty little words. But this remarkable work – which features a spectacularly inventive score – uncovers something grand within the small, squalid lives it portrays.”

Jerry Springer the Opera runs March 5-28, 2015, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, at 8:00 p.m., at the Washington University South Campus Theatre (formerly CBC High School), 6501 Clayton Road, just east of Big Bend. March 5 is a preview. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students/seniors on Fridays and Saturdays; and $20 for adults and $15 for students/seniors on Thursdays. Tickets are on sale now through the Fox Theatre Box Office, or by calling Metrotix, at 314-534-1111. Advance tickets are not sold at the theatre box office.

Jazz St. Louis launched the public phase of a $10M campaign to reimagine and expand the jazz experience in St. Louis’ Grand Center arts district. With commitments of $5.8M to-date, work is already underway at 3540 Washington Boulevard, adjacent to Jazz at the Bistro. The new larger facility will accommodate seating for 220,  add a lounge with additional seating for 75, greatly expand space for jazz education and provide room for Jazz St. Louis staff to reside in one location. Jazz St. Louis is pleased to announce a memorial concert for Richard McDonnell at Jazz at the Bistro, Sunday, May 25, 2014. McDonnell, who passed away February 8, was a long-time board member of Jazz St. Louis and the owner of the MAXJAZZ record label, based in Webster Groves. This concert will feature a headlining performance by MAXJAZZ artists Terell Stafford, Bruce Barth, Tim Warfield, and Carla Cook, joined by St. Louis’s Montez Coleman and Bob DeBoo,starting at 7:00 PM. Many St. Louis-based artists, including Good 4 the Soul, Jesse Gannon, Cheryl Brown, Funky Butt Brass Band, the Gene Dobbs Bradford Blues Experience, the Phil Dunlap Quintet, and more, will be performing throughout the day, beginning at 1:00 PM, leading up to the headlining set. Brilliant Corners, the first band to record on the MAXJAZZ label, will also be performing. A full schedule will be announced Wednesday. The concerts are general admission, free, and open to the public. A suggested donation of $25 can be made at the door to Jazz St. Louis in honor of Rich McDonnell.

Saint Louis Science Center Salutes Veterans On June 6, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day

On June 6, the Saint Louis Science Center will commemorate the 70^th anniversary of D-Day, the Normandy landings, with World War II soldier reenactors, military vehicles, displays by veterans’ organizations and special tributes to World War II veterans before each showing of the giant-screen film D-Day: Normandy 1944. In addition, military veterans will receive free admission to D-Day: Normandy 1944 on June 6 (and select dates listed below). Families and friends of military veterans will receive the military discount of $6.00, special pricing that is offered to our military and veterans every day of the year.

This is a unique opportunity for all Saint Louis Science Center visitors to meet veterans and hear their personal stories, including World War II veterans who took part in the storied Allied invasion and the battles fought in both the European and Pacific Theaters.

St. Louis Jazz and Blues Vespers features on Sunday, March 20, at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary of the Beatitudes of Second Baptist Church of St. Louis. The acoustically excellent sanctuary is located 1/2 mile west of the St. Louis Galleria at the intersection of Clayton Road and McKnight Road (one mile north of the McKnight intersection of Highway 40/I-64). This venue is offered to the best jazz and blues groups in the city to perform 100 minutes of popular music. The Vespers, held on the third Sunday of each month, are free to the public. There is a lighted, free, adjacent parking lot.

Funky Butt Brass Band was formed in 2008 by six musicians who respect and revere the New Orleans brass band tradition. Made up of members of Gumbohead, The Feed, Musica Slesa and other renowned St. Louis groups, the FBBB takes traditional New Orleans brass tunes and gives them a funky flavor, in the style of the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Bands. But don't be surprised if you also hear a little Motown, some Southern rock and a touch of straight-ahead Chicago blues.

Congratulations to the East St. Louis Senior High Jazz Band!

Anyone familiar with the history of jazz in St. Louis and its neighbor East St. Louis, will regale you with tales of the famed East St. Louis Lincoln High School jazz band program under the direction of saxophonist Ron Carter (now Director of Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University).


When Carter took over the program in 1977, the enrollment had dwindled to 15 students. Within two years, more than 100 were enrolled in music programs, touring Europe, making records and playing to international acclaim alongside legends like Wynton Marsalis.

NEW LINE THEATRE SEEKS MULTI-RACIAL CAST FOR POP OPERA "BARE"

MULTI-RACIAL CAST FOR
POP OPERA "BARE"

Auditions for New Line Theatre's production of the pop opera BARE will be held on two successive Monday nights, March 14 and 21, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington University South Campus, 6501 Clayton Road (formerly CBC High School), just east of Big Bend, in the second floor theatre. This is not on the Washington University main campus. Performers need to come to only one of the dates. The show will run for four weeks, June 2-25, 2011. New Line is looking for a multi-racial cast of 15 actors. Twelve of the characters are high school students, but New Line will not cast anyone under 17. There are also roles for one adult man and two adult women. New Line is looking for intelligent singing actors who are willing to take risks onstage. Performers are asked to bring a prepared contemporary theatre song, preferably in rock or pop style, with printed piano music for our pianist (no tapes and no a cappella). There will not be a dance audition. Performers may also be asked to sing from the score.

No roles in the show have been pre-cast. All roles will be cast through the auditions.

ABOUT "BARE"

New Line's 20th Anniversary Season closes with the regional premiere of the cult phenomenon bare, a pop opera by up-and-coming theatre writers Jon Hartmere & Damon Intrabartolo. The show has been described as a mix of Rent and Dead Poets Society, exploring sex, sexuality, self expression, guilt, jealously, and religion, and all overflowing with the kind of urgency and intensity that comes with being 17. First produced in Los Angeles in 2000 and then off Broadway in 2004, this show has attracted a fierce cult following across the country and around the world. The New Liners are thrilled to bring it to St. Louis audiences for the first time.

bare follows five seniors at a Catholic boarding school. At the center are Jason and Peter, who are forced to deal with their mutual romantic attraction while trying to live up to the standards of their parents and the Catholic Church. The show explores the range of problems facing American youth today, from body image to teen pregnancy, from drug culture to adult expectations. The show's first director, Kristin Hanggan, said in an interview, "Its real allure for audiences is the commonality of experience -- alienation, fear of rejection, confusion of sexual identity and the poignancy of marginalization." In Los Angeles, bare won the L.A. Weekly Award for Best Musical, the Ovation Award for Best Musical and the L.A. Drama Critics Award for Best Score. When bare was originally produced in Los Angeles, it was supposed to run for 32 performances at an 87-seat theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard. Four months later, it had become a multi-award-winning sensation created by two 26-year-old writers and a 23-year-old director.

New Line Theatre will be one of the first companies in America to produce this exciting and powerful new pop musical.

No appointments are necessary. All performers should arrive for the audition before 7:00 p.m. New Line is a non-union, professional theatre company and is always very eager to find a multi-racial cast. Rehearsals will begin the first week of April, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., plus every night the week the show opens. Rehearsals are at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in St. Louis Hills. Performances are at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road.
